Jeff Hendrick was called upon from the bench in the first-half after Joe Willock picked up an injury in Newcastle United’s away trip to Wolves. The Dubliner is yet to make a start this campaign for the Magpies amassing a total of just 60 minutes playing time in the Premier League so far this season. However he made an instant impact in this game, levelling things up six minutes after his introduction. Hendrick wrong-footed Sa in the Wolves net, arrowing the ball into the bottom left corner from outside the area. Ciaran Clark started at the back and couldn’t keep out Hee-Chan Hwang whose brace earned Wolves the three points.
At Turf Moor, Nathan Collins started his first league game for Burnley in the absence of Ben Mee and played his part in keeping a clean sheet against Norwich City with the game finishing goalless. There was also a third clean sheet of the season for Brighton and Shane Duffy as they drew 0-0 with Arsenal.
In the Championship on Saturday, Sammie Szmodics’ double for Peterborough ultimately proved to be in vain as they lost 3-2 to Bristol City. The attacking midfielder’s first goal was a cracking effort from outside the box which curled into the top corner while his second demonstrated his ability in the air as he found some space at the front post and directed a strong header into the far corner of the goal to make it 2-2 on the stroke of half-time.
Jimmy Dunne started his third consecutive league game since scoring the winning penalty in the EFL Cup and netted his first league goal for QPR in a 3-2 victory over Preston. The 23-year-old stabbed the ball home after a free-kick was lofted into the Preston box. Sean Maguire assisted Preston’s first of the game.

There was one surprise addition amongst the names on the recent Ireland squad list and that name was Will Keane’s. The 28-year-old qualifies for the Republic through the ‘granny rule’ and declared his desire to represent Ireland back in 2019. He gave the Irish fans a taste of what he can bring to the squad on Saturday when he netted his fifth goal of the season in a 2-0 win for Wigan.
Delight for Will Keane with his first call-up, but frustration for Anthony Scully who continues to be overlooked despite his form. That won’t stop him from scoring though. He scored a 90th minute equalizer from the penalty spot, his seventh in the league and eleventh goal in all competitions, as Lincoln City drew 2-2 with Plymouth Argyle.
Daryl Horgan scored his first goal for Wycombe Wanderers in a seven goal thriller. The Irish winger beat the keeper from outside the area — a goal the Morecambe keeper won’t want to watch back — to give his side their first goal after they were two goals down. Wycombe scored their fourth in the 92nd minute to seal the victory.
Portsmouth eased to an impressive 4-0 victory against second-placed Sunderland. Marcus Harness opened the scoring for Pompey in his 100th appearance for the club. Not a bad way to celebrate the occasion! Ronan Curtis set up the third goal of the game.
Irish international duo Troy Parrott and James McClean also claimed assists on the weekend for their respective clubs.
English League Two
Oldham Athletic’s Harry Vaughan earned his first call-up to the Ireland U-19 squad last week and capped off his eventful week with a tidy finish against Harrogate Town on Saturday afternoon.

There were five Irish goalscorers in the EFL Trophy on Tuesday evening. Firstly to Northampton where Emmanuel Osadebe opened the scoring for Walsall after four minutes before former St Mirren and Dundalk man Dylan Connolly scored from the penalty spot in the second-half to level things up. Walsall went on to win the tie on penalties.
Veteran midfielder Stephen Quinn was also on the scoresheet for Mansfield Town in their 2-1 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday.
Accrington Stanley took on Leicester City’s U-21 side which ended in a 5-0 scoreline in favour of the home side. John O’Sullivan scored the fourth in his first start in front of the Stanley fans. Irish youngster Shane Flynn started at left-back for the Foxes.
Shane McLoughlin also bagged himself a goal in Morecambe’s shootout defeat to Hartlepool United.
Finally shifting from goals to the assists on Tuesday evening. Aiden O’Brien set up both of Sunderland’s goals in their 2-0 win over Lincoln City. Likewise, Kieran Sadlier, Mark Sykes and 20-year-old defender Shadrach Ogie of Leyton Orient all picked up assists on the night.
